What is the best quality you bring to the Shinn & Co. team?
I would say that my best qualities are the thoroughness in my work and the drive to find the right answers and best solutions for the clients. I bring to the Shinn team, 28 years of experience, and with that experience, I can help teach and guide the other members of the team, while they, in-turn, are teaching me. They call it an accounting “practice” because you never stop learning.
What is the best business advice you have ever received?
If you want to understand how businesses operate, study accounting.
I started college as a general business major, not really certain where I wanted to put my focus. Accounting 101 was a required course, and the professor who taught it, Mr. Smythers, was an excellent teacher. One day, he said, “If you want to understand how businesses operate, study accounting.” So, that’s where I put my focus, which was definitely the most rigorous major in the Business College. And, he was right. Compared to what I would have learned in any other business major, studying accounting put me far ahead.
What can a client expect when working with the Shinn & Co. team?
Our strength comes from the team behind the individual directly working with the client. No CPA has all the answers. Shinn & Company has a solid team of CPA’s with decades of experience in many different aspects of accounting. It’s a great resource that smaller firms can’t match, and it’s at a level that even the larger firms struggle to match. We’re large enough to encompass a broad range of skills, yet small enough that we can easily go directly to any CPA in the firm for information and advice.
